The State Department on Saturday issued a caution on worldwide travel, citing heightened tensions in the Middle East.

The department warned that the situation in the region, in which attacks between the U.S. and Iran are increasing, could result in unforeseen escalation and urged Americans overseas to monitor the news for breaking developments in the regions.

"The Department of State advises Americans worldwide, and especially in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution," the department said in the advisory. "Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate."

The department warned Americans that travel could be disrupted if there are flight cancellations or airspace closures and that American diplomatic facilities outside the Middle East have been targeted.

"Groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world," the department said.

The escalated missile and drone attacks over recent days and weeks in the Middle East break a ceasefire upon which both sides agreed earlier this year.
