President Donald Trump on Monday praised his first conversation with new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, claiming their phone call was "very good" and that he wished the British political leader "good luck and Godspeed."

Burnham became the prime minister earlier Monday, shortly after winning a special election to represent his constituency in Parliament. Last week he was named head of the governing Labour Party and former Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned.

"I had a very good conversation with the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham," Trump said on Truth Social. "We discussed many subjects, including the outstanding relationship we have had with the UK."

Trump said that the two leaders will be meeting in the "not too distant" future, which the prime minister echoed in his own statement about inviting the president to visit Manchester, England.

"The Prime Minister has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it and, of course, the U.S.A. will be there to help," Trump said. "The call was interesting, and went very well."

Both leaders confirmed that they spoke about the conflict in the Middle East, and Burnham said he reiterated the UK’s commitment to securing the movement of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to support global supply chains.

"The Prime Minister also underlined his commitment to defence and security and said ensuring the security of the UK and its Allies was at the top of his agenda," the prime minister's office said in a statement. "They looked forward to speaking again soon."
