DHS Secretary Noem asks Treasury to deputize special IRS agents to help in deportation efforts
The criminal-investigation division of the IRS often investigates financial crimes and tax violations.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is asking the Treasury Department to help with the administration's top priorirty of deporting illegal migrant.
Noem is asking Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to deputize IRS criminal investigators to assist, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In her letter to Bessent, Noem suggested her plan is based on an assumption that Treasury has the viable and available resources.
"It is DHS's understanding that the Department of the Treasury has qualified law enforcement personnel available to assist with immigration enforcement, especially in light of recent increases to the Internal Revenue Service's work force and budget," she wrote.
The criminal-investigation division of the IRS often investigates financial crimes and tax violations.
There are also only a few IRS agents who are allowed to carry firearms while in the field.
"This letter requests that you make qualified officials from the Department of the Treasury available to work with ICE and that you consent to those officials being deputized to perform immigration functions," the memo states, according to the Axios media outlet.
