Chief Medical Advisor to the President Dr. Anthony Fauci tested positive Wednesday for COVID-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The 81-year-old NIAID director plans to isolate and work from home, the agency also said.

He reportedly tested positive using a rapid antigen test and is vaccinated and double boosted.

"He has not recently been in close contact with President Biden or other senior government officials," the agency also said a press release announcing that Fauci had tested positive.

Fauci said in April that COVID would not be eliminated and that people are "going to have to make their calculation of the amount of risk that they want to take."

Less than two months ago, Fauci said that the U.S. was "certainly" out of the pandemic phase, but he was forced to walk back his statement just a day later.
