Four officers killed in North Carolina shooting, four others injured
One officer that was killed worked as a deputy U.S. Marshal, two officers were part of the North Carolina Department of Corrections and assigned to the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force, and the fourth was a police officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
At least four law enforcement officers were killed in a North Carolina shooting on Monday afternoon, and four other officers were injured when trying to serve a warrant, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said in a news conference.
The death count is an increase from initial reports, which indicated that three U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force members were killed in the shooting, and one was in critical condition. That officer has since succumbed to his injuries, and one "shooting suspect" was also killed in the shootout, but a second possible shooter was taken to the police station for questioning.
"Today is an absolute tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the profession of law enforcement," Jennings told reporters on Monday night, per CBS News.
The officers, who were part of multiple agencies, had been delivering an arrest warrant for possession of a firearm when the shooting began. The officers returned fire and killed one person they had suspected to be a lone shooter. But additional shots were fired from the house when examining the suspect, and officers found a 17-year-old, and a woman inside the house. Both have been transported to the police station as persons of interest, Jennings said.

Three other Charlotte police officers were also shot in the incident.
President Joe Biden has spoken to Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, and "expressed his condolences and support for the community," the White House confirmed. Cooper also expressed his own condolences for the shooting in a post to social media.
"Our hearts are with the families and co-workers of officers in today's brutal attack, including two state Department of Adult Correction officers working with the US Marshal's Task Force who were shot and killed," Cooper said in a post to X.
