Both the U.S. Transportation Department and Defense Department have announced the end of "identity months" celebrations.

"Going forward, DoD Components and Military Departments will not use official resources, to include man-hours, to host celebrations or events related to cultural awareness months," read a guidance released publicly on Friday by the Pentagon shortly after its new secretary, Pete Hegseth, was sworn-in. "Service members and civilians remain permitted to attend these events in an unofficial capacity outside of duty hours."

The Pentagon's guidance applies to National African American/Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and National American Indian Heritage Month.

Black History Month began on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy made a similar announcement Saturday on social media.

"Effective immediately, the Department of Transportation will no longer participate in celebrations based on immutable traits or any other identity-based observances. These distractions do nothing to keep planes in the air, trains on the tracks, or ports and highways secure," he wrote. "In the wake of two devastating plane crashes, my focus is singular: enforcing the highest standards of safety and accountability. From now on, everyday of every month we celebrate transportation, beautiful infrastructure, and safety."

Duffy defended his position as well as President Trump's decision to end diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs at federal agencies during a CNN interview aired on Sunday.

"I don't care your race, your religion, your color, your sex, your sexual preference. I don't care about any of that. I just want the best and the brightest keeping Americans safe — and that should be the standard," he said. "We're going back to our mission of safety."
