President Donald Trump's pick for secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, had his confirmation advanced by the Senate Thursday in a 51-49 vote to end debate on the matter.

The final confirmation vote will happen Jan. 24, and he is likely to get confirmed for the position.

GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine voted against Hegseth, according to The Hill newspaper.

Hegseth's nomination has been criticized over his qualifications and for alleged personal indiscretions, specifically for alleged sexual misconduct in the past.

He has denied all allegations.

Trump said that Hegseth would bring a new perspective to the Pentagon and rebuild the “most powerful military in the world.”

Some of Trump's other nominees such as Kash Patel for FBI director and Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence will likely have their hearings next week.
