Special counsel Jack Smith plans to resign before President-elect Donald Trump officially takes office, according to DOJ officials cited in reports on Wednesday.

Smith is also reportedly preparing to end the federal prosecutions against Trump by discussing the matter with senior officials.

Smith has been investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents as well as his efforts to contest the results of the 2020 election.

Trump was elected to a second White House term on November 5.
