A Portland resident who admitted to targeting federal law enforcement agents with a knife during a confrontation near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility has been sentenced to three years of probation.

The defendant, 47-year-old Julie Mikela Winters, a transgender individual formerly known as Christopher Hudson, pleaded guilty in federal court to felony intimidation of a federal officer and resisting arrest in connection with the incident outside the ICE office last June, according to court records and Chronicle News.

Prosecutors said Winters approached federal agents guarding the ICE facility and produced a large knife before throwing the blade at an officer, narrowly missing its target. Officers ultimately subdued Winters with a taser and took them into custody after a brief struggle, according to the Justice Department.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, the judge sentenced Winters to time served and three years probation rather than incarceration. The probation period includes standard supervision conditions, and Winters must comply with restrictions tied to the offense, as well as avoid further illegal conduct. 

The case stemmed from a series of protests near the federal building, where federal authorities have repeatedly faced confrontations from demonstrators.
