Trump administration orders states to claw back full SNAP payouts after high court ruling
States are warning that undoing the payments could cause “catastrophic operational disruptions,” according to the Associated Press.
The Trump administration ordered states to retract Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that were distributed just days ago during the ongoing government shutdown.
The directive from the U.S. Department of Agriculture came after the Supreme Court paused lower court rulings that had required full benefits to continue, effectively reversing the legal momentum that had favored millions of low-income households.
More than two dozen states have pushed back on the order, warning that clawing back the payments could cause “catastrophic operational disruptions,” according to the Associated Press.
Many states had already distributed benefits after last week’s judicial wins for Democratic-led coalitions and other groups.
