US and UK issue new sanctions on Iran after attack on Israel
Iran is under sanctions, some of which were eased by President Joe Biden after he entered office.
The United States and the United Kingdom on Thursday issued a new round of sanctions on Iran following the Islamic Republic's major attack on Israel over the weekend.
The U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control said it is "targeting 16 individuals and two entities enabling Iran’s UAV production."
The move was made in coordination with the United Kingdom, the U.S. agency said.
"We’re using Treasury’s economic tools to degrade and disrupt key aspects of Iran’s malign activity, including its UAV program and the revenue the regime generates to support its terrorism," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.

The new sanctions come after Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones toward Israel over the weekend after Tehran blamed Israel for airstrikes in Syria earlier this month. The strikes took out members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who reportedly played a major role in the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.
