U.S. Navy sailor detained in Venezuela after unauthorized travel for personal business: Pentagon

The State Department has declined to comment further on the status of the sailor.

The Pentagon revealed on Wednesday that a U.S. Navy sailor was detained last week in Venezuela after unauthorized travel to the country for personal business.

The sailor has been in custody since around Aug. 30, the agency said.

“We are aware of reports that U.S. Navy Sailor was detained on or about August 30, 2024, by Venezuelan law enforcement authorities while on personal travel to Venezuela," the Pentagon said in a statement. “The U.S. Navy is looking into this and working closely with the State Department.” 

The State Department has declined to comment further on the status of the sailor.
