Georgia Democrats, DNC sue state election board, warn new rules could block final vote certification
The Democratic National Committee and Vice President Kamala Harris’ Democratic presidential campaign are among the plaintiffs
Georgia Democrats have sued the state Election Board, arguing new measures implemented by the agency regarding the election-certification process are illegal.
According to the lawsuit filed Monday in state court, local election officials are now able to “hunt for purported election irregularities of any kind, potentially delaying certification and displacing longstanding (and court-supervised) processes for addressing fraud.”
Local election officials, candidates for political office, the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Party of Georgia, are behind the lawsuit.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ Democratic presidential campaign is also supporting the effort.
“The Georgia state elections board is becoming an equal co-conspirator in this effort to suppress our votes,” Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath said Monday in a news conference at the Georgia Capitol. “With passing this new rule, they are creating barriers to counting votes and certifying the election so Donald Trump can once again attempt to throw our country into chaos.”
