NYPD commissioner expected to resign amid federal corruption scandals engulfing City Hall

NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban is expected to resign amid a growing federal investigation into potential corruption of city officials, according to several news reports.

According to a New York Post report, investigators are looking into Caban's twin brother's consulting business and whether he profited in any way from his brother's position in the NYPD.

Politico is reporting Caban's imminent resignation, citing sources familiar with the matter. But a City Hall spokesperson called it a rumor. 

“We remain focused on ensuring New Yorkers are safe every single day, and that’s our top priority,” spokesperson Fabien Levy said, according to Politico. “We’re not going to speculate on rumors at this point.”

The New York Times reports others in City Hall are seeking Caban's resignation. 

Investigators reportedly took Caban’s phone and requested the phone of Caban's brother, James, as well as the commissioner’s chief of staff Robert Gault.

Since November 2023, several officials in the administration of Democratic Mayor Eric Adams have had their homes searched, their phones seized and their records subpoenaed. In addition, late last year was stopped on the street by FBI agents who served him with a court order and took his phones, according to CNN. 

Adams has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Neither him or anybody in his administration has yet to be charged with a crime.
