Police officer dead, two injured, after being ambushed in California
The suspect was shot, but survived and is in custody.
One police officer was killed as the result of an ambush on Saturday, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.
Police responded to a call about a van in which someone said they saw guns and bomb-making materials.
When authorities reached the area, they spotted the van leaving, and followed it.
"As deputies began investigating, they were ambushed with gunfire and multiple improvised explosive devices," the sheriff's office wrote on Facebook.
"Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller was shot and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead," the post read. "Another deputy was either shot or struck by shrapnel and struck by a car as the suspect fled the property. We are hopeful the deputy will recover."
Sheriff Jim Hart during a press conference said that the suspect "carjacked a vehicle and attempted to carjack another vehicle." The sheriff also said that "there was another officer from highway patrol that was shot in the hand."
The suspect, Steven Carrillo, who was shot, survived his injuries and has been arrested.
