A record 1 in 8 students were homeless in New York City in 2023, according to a new report released on Monday.

Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) found that more than 146,000 students were homeless at some point during the academic year.

The group's report relied on data from the New York State Education Department.

According to the findings in the report, more than two-thirds of students in homeless shelters and 50% of the students in temporary housing are often absent from school.
