Two arrested in Georgia in fatal shooting of jogger caught on video
The two men arrested were a father and son
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Thursday arrested two men in the case of 25-year-old jogger Ahmaud Arbery whose fatal shooting earlier this year was captured on video.
Authorities charged 64-year-old Gregory McMichael and his son 34-year-old Travis McMichael with murder and aggravated assault, according to the Bureau. Officials said that on Feb. 23 the men confronted Arbery.
"During the encounter, Travis McMichael shot and killed Arbery," the press release says.
A video has emerged that shows parts of the confrontation—in the video two men appear to be engaged in a struggle and shots can be heard. One man is eventually seen collapsing.
The Associated Press noted that the McMichaels are white while the victim was black.
Arbery's mother says that she believes her son was out jogging. AJC reported that Gregory McMichael informed authorities that he recognized Arbery from surveillance footage from a break in.
“This is the first step to justice,” Ahmaud's father's attorney Benjamin Crump said in a statement. “This murderous father and son duo took the law into their own hands. It’s a travesty of justice that they enjoyed their freedom for 74 days after taking the life of a young black man who was simply jogging.”
