Minnesota National Guard and police security team shot at in drive-by incident

Two members of the Minnesota National Guard were injured, though not critically, in an early morning drive by shooting incident on Sunday. The shooters fired at the neighborhood security team consisting of Guard members and Minneapolis Police.

"The shooting occurred on or about 4:19 a.m., as a light colored SUV fired several shots at an Operation Safety Net security team providing neighborhood security," according to a press release from the Minnesota National Guard. "No team members were seriously injured. Two National Guard members did sustain minor injuries from the incident." 

The drive by shooting occurred as national focus has been directed toward both the Minneapolis trial of Derek Chauvin in connection with the death of George Floyd last year and toward the police shooting of Daunte Wright earlier this month in Brooklyn Center.

"I am relieved to know none of our Guardsmen were seriously injured," Minnesota National Guard Adjutant General  Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke said in a statement. "This event highlights the volatility and tension in our communities right now. I ask for peace as we work through this difficult time."
