Over 800 migrants died crossing illegally into U.S. this year, deadliest year on record: Report
Figure breaks previous record set in 2021.
Fiscal year 2022 was reportedly the deadliest on record for immigrants attempting to illegally enter the United States, according to border figures reviewed by CBS News.
The news network said that "at least 853 migrants died trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border unlawfully in the past 12 months, making fiscal year 2022 the deadliest year for migrants recorded by the U.S. government," according to "internal Border Patrol data."
The outlet said that this year's grim toll "far exceeded the previous record of 546 migrant deaths recorded by Border Patrol in fiscal year 2021."
It further noted that the 853 figure "is likely an undercount due to data collection limits."
