Border Patrol reports slight increase in illegal border crossings from July to August
The agency reported that just over 58,000 migrants were arrested for trying to enter the country illegally on the country's southern border. The number is slightly higher than the 56,399 arrested in July, but it's 68% lower than 2023, according to the CBP.
The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Monday revealed that illegal border crossings in August were down from August of 2023, but were slightly higher than July's numbers.
The agency reported that just over 58,000 migrants were arrested for trying to enter the country illegally on the country's southern border. The number is slightly higher than the 56,399 arrested in July, but it's 68% lower than 2023, according to the CBP.
The report comes after President Joe Biden issued a presidential proclamation in June that effectively shuts down the border if the illegal crossings reach 2,500 crossings in one week. It also allows the administration to deport some of those migrants.
“CBP continues to enforce the Securing the Border interim final rule and deliver strong consequences for illegal entry, and encounters between ports of entry remain at their lowest level in years,” Troy Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner, said in a statement.
The agency said that on top of the arrests, it has deported 131,000 individuals to more than 140 countries between June 5, and Sept. 10.
On the northern border, CBP said there has been a drop of 30% in arrests between June and August.
