The Trump administration's top trade negotiator on Wednesday warned that the U.S. is prepared to respond in kind after Canada announced it would match U.S. tariffs dollar-for-dollar. 

"If there's further retaliation from the Canadian side, of course, we're not going to just sit down and take that. Our view is, 'Don't retaliate,'" U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said, speaking outside the White House, the CBC reported. 

Greer also disputed Canada’s claim that last-minute demands from the U.S. derailed a trade deal between the two countries. Rather, Greer asserted, it was the Canadian negotiator's concerns about how the deal would be implemented that led to Canada ceasing the talks. 

"We had agreed to, as I've shared before in the press, really the best deal available to any country on the planet with respect to Canada. When [Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc] came back, they had some additional views. They had some additional requests. They had some additional things that were too much for the United States," Greer told CBC News. 

Greer said it's not clear when Canada and the U.S. will resume trade negotiations, and he and LeBlanc are not in contact as of Wednesday. 

"I have a good relationship with Minister LeBlanc, but right now, I think the Canadian side is talking about their next steps," Greer said.
