Feds probing whether two federal officers in Minnesota lied about confrontation that led to shooting
Lyons said a review of the case, which includes a look at video evidence, revealed the officers appeared to make "untruthful statements," about the incident while under oath. He did not indicate what part of their testimonies were untruthful.
Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons said Friday that officials are investigating whether two federal officers lied under oath about an incident in Minnesota that led to an illegal migrant being shot in the leg.
The shooting occurred last month in Minneapolis, when federal agents were allegedly ambushed by shovel-wielding suspects. The incident occurred during a targeted traffic stop of an illegal Venezuelan migrant.
Lyons said a review of the case, which includes a look at video evidence, revealed the officers appeared to make "untruthful statements," about the incident while under oath. He did not indicate which part of their testimonies were untruthful.
"Today, a joint review by ICE and the Department of Justice of video evidence has revealed that sworn testimony provided by two separate officers appears to have made untruthful statements," Lyons said in a statement, according to ABC News. "Both officers have been immediately placed on administrative leave pending the completion of a thorough internal investigation. Lying under oath is a serious federal offense. The U.S. Attorney's Office is actively investigating these false statements.
"The men and women of ICE are entrusted with upholding the rule of law and are held to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct," he continued. "Violations of this sacred sworn oath will not be tolerated. ICE remains fully committed to transparency, accountability, and the fair enforcement of our nation's immigration laws."
The revelation comes a day after the U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota asked a judge to dismiss charges against two of the suspects, including the one who was shot in the leg, citing "newly discovered evidence."
