Six U.S. service members among those killed in Sinai helicopter crash

Six American service members are among eight people killed when a helicopter crashed Thursday in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, the Pentagon announced.

The helicopter was part of an international peacekeeping mission, as part of a U.S.-led mission in the region.

"The Defense Department is deeply saddened by the loss of six U.S. and two partner nation service members in a helicopter crash in the Sinai Peninsula operating with the United Nations Multinational Force and Observers (MFO)," the Pentagon said in a Nov. 12 statement.

"Yesterday we recognized the sacrifice of millions of American veterans who have defended our nation for generations, and today we are tragically reminded of the last full measure our uniformed warriors may pay for their service," acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller said.

Other military victims reportedly are French and Czech nationals. The dead have not been identified.

A spokesman for U.S. Central Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
