Former DHS chief says GOP needs to use the power of the purse to deal with the border crisis
"It all comes back to making sure that we bring some order out of the chaos at the border," Chad Wolf said.
Former acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf says that the incoming GOP House majority needs to crack down hard on the issue of the border crisis if they want it solved.
"I think there's a number of things that they can likely do," Wolf said on Wednesday's edition of the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "They can require that a number of policies be put back in place and they can do that by withholding funds — even for the department until those policies are actually enacted."
"It all comes back to making sure that we bring some order out of the chaos at the border," he continued. "That's really what it's all about at the end of the day."
Title 42, the public health order invoked by former President Donald Trump, is set to end on Dec. 21. This order allowed Border Patrol agents to block migrants at the U.S. border from seeking asylum. Title 42 is part of a 1944 federal law, the Public Health Service Act, and it was intended to help stop the spread of communicable disease.
According to Wolf, when this policy ends, the border crisis will get worse.
"When Title 42 goes away, if it goes away — you're gonna see a very real problem along that border, because there's no plan in place," he explained.
Wolf explained that more and more families of migrants will be coming to the border and DHS agents will not be allowed to turn them away.
"You'll see children, you'll see families, you'll see men and women ages 18 to 35," he said. "They'll be coming from 130 different countries around the world. So it's not just Central Americans and Mexicans."
