Graham backs Iran diplomacy: 'It is the outcome I seek, not the method'

His comments came as the Iranians rejected a proposed 15-point peace agreement from the U.S. and responded with a 5-point plan that involved the payment of war reparations and guarantees of no further U.S. military incursions.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., this week indicated a preference for resolving the Iran war via diplomacy, marking a contrast with his typically pro-war statements.

Graham, widely regarded as one of the strongest advocates for military action in Iran, expressed support for the administration's efforts to negotiate with Iran to end the war.

"Not only do I support [Trump] and his team's efforts to negotiate with Iran to find a solution to the threats this regime presents to the region and the world, I encourage it.

It is the outcome I seek, not the method," he posted on X.

"I have confidence in President Trump's negotiating team to make sure that any deal would meet the military objectives laid out early on," he added.

His comments came as the Iranians rejected a proposed 15-point peace agreement from the U.S. and responded with a 5-point plan that involved the payment of war reparations and guarantees of no further U.S. military incursions.

Graham is facing a serious primary challenge this cycle and some polling has suggested that he could be forced into a runoff against either Paul Dans or Mark Lynch. Thus far, only Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has had to compete in a runoff election after facing a primary challenge.

He will face Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in May and could become the first upper chamber Republican to lose a primary challenge in decades.
