Hegseth unveils new 'Gemini for Government' AI tool for Department of War employees
Hegseth said the new AI tool is a specialized version of Google's Gemini and is approved to handle controlled unclassified information. The department also said other American-made AI capabilities will be available soon.
War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Tuesday that the Pentagon is using a new artificial intelligence tool, which was created specifically for the United States military, dubbed "Gemini for Government."
The tool comes as President Donald Trump pushes for a uniform system of AI regulations for the entire U.S., and has urged science agencies such as the Energy Department to embrace artificial intelligence.
Hegseth said the new AI tool is a specialized version of Google's Gemini and is approved to handle controlled unclassified information. The department also said other American-made AI capabilities will be available soon.
"I am pleased to introduce GenAI.mil, a secure generative AI platform for every member of the Department of War," Hegseth wrote in an email to department employees. "It is live today and available on the desktops of all military personnel, civilians and contractors. With this launch, we are taking a giant step toward mass AI adoption across the department. This tool marks the beginning of a new era, where every member of our workforce can be more efficient and impactful."
Google said more than 3 million civilian and military personnel will be able to access the service, which will help streamline and increase productivity.
The site is available only to military personnel with a common access card and who are on the War Department's nonclassified network. Users are encouraged to double-check everything the tool provides to ensure accuracy.
