House Homeland Security Chairman Green says Harris abandoned her responsibility to secure the border

House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., said that Vice President Kamala Harris failed to secure the country during her role as the "border czar."

"Understanding, then, that Harris has long held responsibility for ending this self-inflicted crisis, Americans deserve answers on whether she followed through on her charge," Green wrote in an op-ed Thursday for the New York Post.

The House last week passed a resolution "strongly condemning" Harris for her handling of the role as the "border czar."

Symone Sanders, Harris's then-chief spokeswoman, said the vice president had been tasked with addressing the root causes of migration and to deal with Latin American countries.

Green went on to list some statistics in the op-ed about how the Biden-Harris administration's border policies have impacted the U.S.

"Additionally, roughly 2 million known gotaways have evaded Border Patrol agents since fiscal year 2021. Encounters at official ports of entry have exploded from just under 20,000 in January 2021 to more than 117,000 in June 2024," he wrote. 

Earlier this week, ep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., requested records from the Department of Homeland Security that refer to Harris as the "border czar." He further demanded communications from Homeland Security Secretary Alejdandro Mayorkas that referred to Harris as "czar", "lead", or anything other designation signaling she held responsibility for border issues.
