HSI probe leads to conviction in $100M money laundering scheme
Geoffrey Auyeung received a five-year prison sentence and a further 3 years of supervised release.
A Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) probe led to the conviction of a U.S. citizen in a $100 million money-laundering scheme based in Washington.
Geoffrey Auyeung received a five-year prison sentence and a further 3 years of supervised release. He was convicted on June 9 of a years-long scheme in which he convinced investors to send money to fake accounts in the Netherlands and Texas, before moving the funds through intermediaries to Russia and Nigeria.
“Mr. Auyeung took advantage of investors who thought they were invest[ing] in the oil and gas industry,” said acting HSI Seattle Special Agent in Charge April Miller. “Not just Americans, but people all around the world.”
HSI and the IRS led the investigation into Auyeung's activities. While the total fraudulent investments amounted to $97.1 million from 2022 through 2024, Auyeung received just over $4 million in commissions as part of the scheme.
