National Security Adviser Michael Waltz on Tuesday night accepted "full responsibility" for accidentally adding a journalist to a national security discussion on Signal, which included the sharing of sensitive information.

President Donald Trump earlier Tuesday said that an investigation into the incident found that the journalist was added by one of Waltz's staffers, who had the reporter's number in their phone.

Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, was accidentally added to a chain last week containing messages from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Waltz, Vice President JD Vance, and 15 other senior national security officials. The discussion regarded the Defense Department's strike plans on the Houthis in Yemen.

Goldberg said that he had received an invitation to join the chat by Waltz, and the National Security Council said the thread appeared to be authentic.

Waltz accepted responsibility for the issue in a comment to Fox News host Laura Ingraham.

"I take full responsibility. I built the — I built the group," Waltz said. "My job is to make sure everything's coordinated."

Waltz added that they are still trying to figure out exactly what happened, but indicated without evidence that Goldberg could have deliberately tried to join the chat.

"Now, whether he did it deliberately or it happened in some other technical means is something we're trying to figure out," Waltz said. "We've got the best technical minds looking at how this happened."

The national security official has also denied ever knowing Goldberg, whom he called "the bottom scum of journalists."

"I know him in the sense that he hates the president, but I don't text him. He wasn't on my phone. And we're going to figure out how this happened," Waltz said.
