Mike Johnson casts doubt on 'boots on the ground' in Greenland

His remarks come as Trump has escalated his rhetoric about the necessity of American control of the island for security reasons.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday downplayed concerns of a military operation to secure Greenland for the United States as President Donald Trump renews his push to take the island.

"There’s no declaration of war pending for Greenland. It’s just not a thing. I don’t anticipate any boots on the ground anywhere, anytime soon,” Johnson told The Hill.

His remarks come as Trump has escalated his rhetoric about the necessity of American control of the island for security reasons. His ambitions for the acquisition have ruffled feathers in Europe, with several nations questioning the viability of NATO in the event of a military altercation with the U.S.

Though Denmark has resisted any negotiations, the recent U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has heightened concerns of military action from Washington.
