The United States Secret Service said Monday that one person has been injured in an officer-involved shooting near the White House, but their condition is not currently known.

Gunshots were reportedly heard as President Donald Trump took the stage inside the East Room for a Small Business Summit, according to the Daily Caller, and authorities sent the press into the briefing room for safety precautions while areas were placed under lockdown.

The Secret Service said the shooting took place at 15th Street and Independence Ave in the northwest quadrant of the city and the public should avoid the area while emergency crews respond.

"U.S. Secret Service personnel are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C.," the Secret Service posted on X. "One individual was shot by law enforcement; their condition is currently unknown. Please avoid the area as emergency crews are responding."

The agency said the shooting was the result of a confrontation between an armed individual and the Secret Service police.

The incident comes just over a week after an alleged gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton late last month. One Secret Service agent was shot at the Hilton but was not injured.
