A Pentagon official confirmed Wednesday that a data breach has leaked personal information of more than 2.7 million American military and civilian personnel, including social security numbers and employment information.

The data breach, which occurred when unauthorized users accessed unencrypted files, took place between October 2025 and July 2026.

A Pentagon official said the breach affected 2.76 million living people and another 294,000 who are deceased. The breach was discovered in July but those impacted were only notified on Sept. 18, according to Fox News.

“A Defense Manpower Data Center information system experienced unauthorized access of personally identifiable information by a small number of unauthorized users between October 2025 and July 2026," an official told ABC News on Monday. "Upon discovery, DMDC immediately remediated the vulnerability."

The agency maintains more than 60 million personnel records and the Pentagon said it has found no evidence so far that the exposed information has been misused. 

News of the incident comes after the FBI said it was aware of a possible hack related to the fbijobs.gov portal last week.
