War Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers Wednesday that the Pentagon has released the $400 million in Ukraine support. This followed former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell drawing attention to the delay.

McConnell slammed the Pentagon for the delay in a Washington Post op-ed Tuesday and accused a defense official of "stonewall[ing]" lawmakers who sought an explanation for the months-long wait.

The Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2026 late last year, which included $400 million for Ukraine to be released in 2026 and another $400 million in 2027 through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

“The department recognizes that $400 million was allocated for European capacity building, and as of yesterday, it has been released,” Hegseth told Maryland Democratic Rep. Sarah Elfreth, according to The Hill.

The lawmaker also asked when the money would be able to be used on the ground in Ukraine, to which Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst III said it would depend on "what they buy with the money.”

“We’re going to take the advice of the EUCOM commanders, we employ those funds for best use,” Hurst added.

The funds are intended to pay for the production of high-priority weapons by U.S. companies for Ukraine’s armed forces.
