CNN announced it will host a California governor debate later this month between Republican candidate Steve Hilton and former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, a Democrat.

The two candidates advanced to the general election earlier this year, with Becerra securing the first slot. Hilton eventually secured the second slot over Democrat Tom Steyer.

The debate will take place on September 30 at 9 p.m. Eastern and will be moderated by CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. The event will take place in Southern California, the outlet confirmed.

Becerra has pitched himself to California voters as an experienced choice to become the state's governor next year, highlighting his decades-long career in public service. He previously served as a U.S. Representative for more than two decades, as health secretary under former President Joe Biden and state attorney general.

Hilton, a former Fox News host, political commentator and British political adviser, has aligned himself heavily with President Donald Trump despite running in a largely Democratic state. Hilton has been trailing Becerra in the polls.
