Russian hackers stole emails between Microsoft, US government, officials say
The group that is being questioned is a cyber-espionage group that US officials have previously linked to foreign surveillance in Russia.
Russian hackers got access to and stole government emails between Microsoft and federal agencies, U.S. officials have confirmed.
U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency senior official Eric Goldstein told reporters that Microsoft informed multiple federal agencies that the hackers might have gotten access to login information and passwords.
“At this time, we are not aware of any agency production environments that have experienced a compromise as a result of a credential exposure,” he said.
In addition, a CISA official told CNN that as of now there is no evidence the hackers were able to steal credentials to hack into government computers.
CISA released an “emergency directive” earlier this week that advised civilian agencies that might have been affected by the hacking to increase security.
