Secret Service Director Sean Curran clarified Thursday that the Secret Service agent who was shot last weekend at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner was allegedly shot by the suspect, not friendly fire as speculated.

Cole Tomas Allen has been charged with allegedly attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, after he allegedly opened fire during the dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday.

Curran told Fox News' Will Cain that the suspect was never hit by Secret Service fire but that the suspect hit one of the agents at close range. The only Secret Service agent to fire at the suspect was the one who was hit, and he shot off five rounds.

"I will tell you that the officer, while being shot, was in the process of falling down and was returning gunfire," Curran said. "To be shot at is not a pleasant thing and to be able to actually return fire at that speed is just remarkable."

Curran also confirmed that the suspect fell after hitting his knee on the magnetometer boxes.

Trump also said Thursday that the Secret Service agent was not struck by friendly fire and a federal review of witness and agent statements has found evidence consistent with the alleged gunman shooting the agent, according to USA Today.

"They say it was not friendly fire," Trump told reporters when asked who was responsible for shooting the agent. "That's what I heard. I heard that. They said it wasn't friendly fire. It was actually reported."
