A senior Iranian leader on Wednesday warned Gulf States that Tehran would target their infrastructure if they aided the U.S. in an assault on one of the islands in the Persian Gulf.

Mohamed Ghalibaf, the Iranian parliament speaker, issued the threat. Ghalibaf had been rumored to be the senior Iranian leader negotiating with the United States on a ceasefire, though he has publicly denied such actions and insisted Iran would not make concessions to Washington.

"Based on some data, Iran's enemies, with the support of one of the regional countries, are preparing to occupy one of the Iranian islands," he said. "All enemy movements are under the full surveillance of our armed forces. If they step out of line, all the vital infrastructure of that regional country will, without restriction, become the target of relentless attacks."

Iran has already targeted the Gulf States, though it has primarily focused on American military infrastructure in the region and oil production facilities. Tehran has, however, previously threatened to strike desalination plants in the Gulf if President Donald Trump went forward with strikes on its civilian power grid.

The deployment of the 82nd Airborne Division, a mobile assault unit of the U.S. Army, has led to speculation that the U.S. may occupy one of the Iranian islands in the Gulf in order to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
