Sixteen pro-Palestine protesters arrested at Yale
Peter Salovey, Yale president, said in a statement Saturday that Yale would not “tolerate actions, including remarks, that threaten, harass, or intimidate members of the university’s Jewish, Muslim or other communities.”
Yale police Monday reportedly arrested 16 protesters at the Ivy League college who had gathered in support of Palestinians.
The Yale Daily News reported that the protesters have been camping on the New Haven, Conn., campus for three nights, demanding the university divest from military weapon manufacturers.
Officers gathered at the protest early Monday, according to the school paper. The reportedly warned journalists and students they had to leave campus or be arrested. Minutes later, the officers began arresting people for trespassing.
According to a statement from Yale on the protests, 47 students had been issued summonses.
“The university made the decision to arrest those individuals who would not leave the plaza with the safety and security of the entire Yale community in mind and to allow access to university facilities by all members of our community,” the university stated.
