Trump backs Abbott, urges states to provide Texas 'full support' to secure southern border
The Lone Star State has quarreled in recent months with the federal government over Operation Lone Star, Texas's state-level effort to secure the border.
Former President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed support for Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott's efforts to secure the southern border amid perceived federal apathy toward the unprecedented surge in illegal border crossings.
The Lone Star State has quarreled in recent months with the federal government over Operation Lone Star, Texas's state-level effort to secure the border. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court sided with the Biden administration and lifted an injunction against federal agents cutting the state's razor-wire fence along the border. The court did not decide of the case's merits.
Abbott has vowed to uphold the state's right to defend itself and drawn the support of many Republican governors. Trump, for his part, vowed to back Texas and to work with states to secure the border.
"When I was President, we had the most secure Border in History. Joe Biden has surrendered our Border, and is aiding and abetting a massive Invasion of millions of Illegal Migrants into the United States," Trump declared on Truth Social. "Instead of fighting to protect our Country from this onslaught, Biden is, unbelievably, fighting to tie the hands of Governor Abbott and the State of Texas, so that the Invasion continues unchecked. In the face of this National Security, Public Safety, and Public Health Catastrophe, Texas has rightly invoked the Invasion Clause of the Constitution, and must be given full support to repel the Invasion."
"We encourage all willing States to deploy their guards to Texas to prevent the entry of Illegals, and to remove them back across the Border. All Americans should support the commonsense measures by Texas authorities to protect the Safety, Security, and Sovereignty of Texas, and of the American people," he went on. "When I am President, on Day One, instead of fighting Texas, I will work hand in hand with Governor Abbott and other Border States to Stop the Invasion, Seal the Border, and Rapidly Begin the Largest Domestic Deportation Operation in History. Those Biden has let in should not get comfortable because they will be going home."
Several Republican-led states, such as Florida, have already deployed their National Guard to Texas and provided the state with additional resources. Gov. Ron DeSantis, this week, vowed to maintain that policy.
