Trump quips about destroying Iran, leaving allies in charge of Strait of Hormuz
Major U.S. allies, including the UK, France, and Germany, have declined to send warships to the region.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday mulled "finishing off" the Iranian terror state and leaving the responsibility for the Strait of Hormuz to American allies in a bid to encourage their contribution to the war effort.
"I wonder what would happen if we “finished off” what’s left of the Iranian Terror State, and let the Countries that use it, we don’t, be responsible for the so called 'Strait?' That would get some of our non-responsive “Allies” in gear, and fast!!!" he posted on Truth Social.
Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with NATO members and other American allies over their refusal to contribute to a naval coalition to reopen the strait, which the Iranians have effectively shut down by targeting ships attempting to navigate the waterway.
Thus far, the U.S. Navy has not conducted naval escorts and ships attempting to leave the Persian Gulf have been subject to missile attacks from the coast. Major shipping companies, such as Maersk and Cosco, have suspended cargo bookings for the region while oil producers have declared force majeure.
