Trump, Vance tout achievements in first Cabinet meeting since start of Iran war
"This has been an incredibly successful operation," Vance insisted.
President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance began the first Cabinet meeting since the start of the Iran war with an update on the state of the Iran war.
The war began in late February after the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iranian leadership. Polling data has shown the move to be unpopular with the public, however, and a recent Fox News survey showed 64% of registered voters disapproved of Trump's handling of the issue. Nevertheless, Trump and Vance sounded an optimistic tone and pointed to the results of the American attacks.
"Well, now we have to take an excursion to Iran, and we have to stop this maniac who's no longer with us," Trump said. "The Supreme Leader wasn't so supreme, no longer with us. It's very sad, but we have to stop him from blowing up the world, blowing up the Middle East, and blowing up our country, and we did that."
"And I thought, frankly, I thought the oil prices would go up more and I thought the stock market would go down more. Hasn't been nearly as severe as I thought," he added. Trump then asked Vance to provide an update on the Iran situation, in light of his involvement in the negotiations process.
"The Iranian conventional military is effectively destroyed. They don't have a navy. They don't have the ability to hit us like they could have even a few weeks ago. What that does is that gives us options, Mr. President," Vance said. "Every single objective the President clearly laid out on the first night of this operation is being effectuated."
"This has been an incredibly successful operation," Vance insisted.
