U.S. forces interdicted a sanctioned oil tanker in international waters overnight, the Department of War announced Tuesday.

"As we have made clear, we will pursue global maritime enforcement efforts to disrupt illicit networks and interdict sanctioned vessels providing material support to Iran – anywhere they operate," the department, formerly known as the Defense Department, said in an X post.

The interdiction, which occurred in the Indian Ocean, was "without incident," the federal agency also said.

The statement called the ship, the M/T Tifani,"stateless" – meaning it has no national identity. Such ships have no recognized right to navigate freely in international waters.

The interdiction is among the most recent actions by the U.S. in its war on Iran to stop any ship tied to Iran or those suspected of carrying supplies that could help its government, according to the Associated Press

The oil tanker previously sanctioned for smuggling Iranian crude oil in Asia, the wire service also reports.
