The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was penetrated by hackers who are suspected of working for Russia, Reuters reported on Monday.

The news organization in its report cited “people familiar with the matter."

The breach was revealed following reports Sunday night that major hacks had occurred across U.S. government civilian systems.

The FBI and the government's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warned in October that a Russian state-sponsored hacking group had launched a campaign against U.S. targets, including government and aviation networks.

The Russian embassy did not immediately respond to questions from Just the News.
