The United States Central Command said Tuesday that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched a surprise attack on American troops overseas but that the attack was successfully thwarted.

The surprise attack comes after President Donald Trump paused his strikes against the Middle Eastern country over the weekend in order to give peace negotiations another chance. 

CENTCOM said the attack occurred at 5:45 p.m. Eastern and all ballistic missiles were intercepted. 

"Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East," CENTCOM said on X. "All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. U.S. forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness."

It was not clear if American forces would immediately retaliate for the latest strikes, but war resumed in the Middle East recently with American forces carrying out strikes on Iranian coastal targets and infrastructure following a sharp escalation that began after Iran fired on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
