US names soldiers killed in Jordan drone strike
"The President and I will not tolerate attacks on US forces, and we will take all necessary actions to defend the US and our troops," Secretary Austin said.
The Department of Defense on Monday identified the three U.S. servicemembers who died in a recent drone attack on U.S. facility in Jordan.
President Joe Biden has blamed Iran-backed militants for the lethal strike, though whether Iran was directly involved remains unclear. The drone reportedly struck at the same time a U.S. drone was due to return, confusing American forces and impairing their response.
The three who died were Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23; Sgt. William Rivers, 46; and Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24; according to CNN.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin fumed over the strike, saying "[l]et me start with my outrage and sorrow for the death of three brave US troops in Jordan, and for the other troops who were wounded."
"The President and I will not tolerate attacks on US forces, and we will take all necessary actions to defend the US and our troops," he continued.
The three deceased were part of the 718th Engineer Company and were stationed at the Tower 22 outpost. More than 40 people sustained injuries from the strike.
The outpost is situated in a demilitarized zone near the intersection of the Jordanian-Syrian, and Iraqi borders. Roughly 350 U.S. troops are deployed at the facility, according to the Associated Press.
