President Joe Biden will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday in California at an economic summit.

The White House has been saying for weeks that it anticipated Biden would meet with Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which is being held this year in San Francisco.

The leaders of the world’s two largest economies are expected to discuss trade, Taiwan and other U.S.-Chinese related issues.

The meeting would be the first between the leaders in nearly a year, according to The Associated Press.

The meeting comes amid what appears to be increasingly strained relations between the two economic superpowers, over such issues as national security, Russia's war on Ukraine and China's potential control over Taiwan.

However, it is not expected to result in a major agreement between Biden and Xi.

One official told The Associated Press that Biden is looking toward “managing the competition, preventing the downside risk of conflict and ensuring channels of communication are open.”
