Biden ends COVID-19 national emergency by signing bipartisan congressional resolution
The national emergency was set to expire on May 11.
President Joe Biden has signed a bipartisan congressional resolution to end the COVID-19 national emergency weeks before it was set to expire.
The White House had voiced public opposition to the resolution, but Biden signed it Monday, according to the Associated Press.
The emergency order had been in place for more than three years. It allowed the federal government to respond to the pandemic with sweeping steps. Some of the emergency steps had been wound down but others are still in the process of being phased out.
The national emergency was set to expire on May 11.
The resolution passed the Senate last month by a 68-23 vote. However, the resolution faced more opposition in the House when nearly 200 Democrats voted against the measure when it passed the chamber in February.
