Biden's painful final hour ends with family pardons, Trump speech bashing his record

"We now have a government that cannot manage a simple crisis at home while at the same time stumble into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad," President Donald Trump said, standing a few feet away from Biden.

Joe Biden entered his presidency insisting his family did nothing wrong and that his policies would make America better. On Monday, in his final hour of a half-century in politics, he was painfully reminded that much of America believes he did not deliver.

Just before he left office, America's 46th president was forced to preemptively pardon his relatives and his allies on the Jan. 6th Democrat-led congressional committee and to then painfully sit through Donald Trump's inauguration speech blasting his legacy.

"We now have a government that cannot manage a simple crisis at home while at the same time stumble into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad," Trump said in his address as Biden sat a few feet away.

"We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defense of foreign borders but refuses to defend American borders, or, more importantly, its own people."

Just minutes before his time in office expired, Biden pardoned his brother Jim Biden, his sister-in-law Sara, his sister Valerie and her husband, John Owens, and his brother Francis. These were on top of the sweeping pardon he gave his son Hunter in December that erased federal gun and tax convictions.

"My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me -- the worst kind of partisan politics," Biden wrote in a statement explaining his decision. "Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end."

“The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” he continued.

The pardons were followed by a grueling hour of sitting as Trump deconstructed the impact of his administration's policies.

The Republican president also took aim at several policies and actions under the Biden administration, including government censorship, prosecuting political opponents, diversity quotas, and firing U.S. service members for refusing to follow the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Biden didn't applause when others did at these announcements, and looked down or yawned at various points.

"The American dream will soon be back and thriving like never before to restore competence and effectiveness to our federal government," Trump said as he announced that he will create the Department of Government Efficiency.

"After years and years of illegal and unconstitutional federal efforts to restrict free expression, I will also sign an executive order to immediately stop all government censorship and bring back free speech to America," he continued.

"Never again will the immense power of the state be weaponized to persecute political opponents, something I know something about. We will not allow that to happen. It will not happen again. Under my leadership, we will restore fair, equal and impartial justice under the constitutional rule of law, and we are going to bring law and order back to our cities.

"This week, I will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life. We will forge a society that is colorblind and merit-based," Trump said. "As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.

"This week, I will reinstate any service members who were unjustly expelled from our military for objecting to the COVID vaccine mandate with full back pay. And I will sign an order to stop our warriors from being subjected to radical political theories and social experiments while on duty. It's going to end immediately. Our armed forces will be free to focus on their sole mission: defeating America's enemies."
