Democrats supporting Biden's re-election campaign were hurt by calls for it to end: report
Other Democrats, including Sen. Coons, then joined Biden in endorsing Harris.
Democratic elected officials who were backing President Joe Biden in his re-election bid were hurt by calls for the campaign to end, according to Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del.
In a new interview with "CBS This Morning," Coons said that it was difficult to see fellow Democrats call for Biden to end his re-election bid.
"It was a very hard couple of weeks as folks who felt urgently about this decision increasingly spoke up, first privately and then publicly, and in the last conversation we had of the co-chairs of the campaign and in some conversations with fellow senators who like me were deeply committed to continuing this campaign with Joe Biden as the nominee, were quite angry and hurt,” Coons said, according to The Hill.
Coons added that Biden really did want a second term and other Democratic senators also wanted that.
Last weekend, Biden ended his re-election campaign for 2024 and shortly thereafter endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination.
Other Democrats, including Coons, then joined Biden in endorsing Harris.
The Democratic Convention will be held beginning August 19 in Chicago, Illinois.
