The White House's first diversity and inclusion officer plans to leave his position at the end of January, the White House confirmed.

Michael Leach said serving in the post had "been the honor of a lifetime," the Associated Press reported.

He first assumed the position in 2021 after previously heading up the Biden campaign's own diversity and inclusion efforts. He informed the White House of his plans weeks ago, though the administration has yet to name a successor, according to The Hill.

"President Biden committed to building a federal government that looks like America, and he has kept that promise with the help of leaders like Michael Leach... Michael has set the bar high as an exemplary public servant, and he will be missed," said White House Office of Public Engagement Director Stephen Benjamin.
